A Look Back
In 1910 Kent Normal School was founded after beating out 20 other northeast Ohio communities trying to earn the location for one of only two new schools. Three years later, the first 144 students to attend classes at the Kent campus enrolled and the rest has been history. Football kicked off in 1922 and has since produced some of the greatest athletes and coaches in football history, including Lou Holtz, Nick Saban, James Harrison, and many more. In the 1940s Kent State welcomed an influx of students as more than 10,000 World War II veterans returned to the United States and started their college careers.
May 4, 1970
The next two decades were largely routine as students earned degrees and continued on their journeys at Kent State, but in 1970 on May 4 tragedy struck. Kent State made history when on May 1 students began to protest the expansion of the Vietnam War and riots broke out. After a weekend of escalating tensions, on Monday, May 4 students came together for a planned protest at noon with nearly 2,000 students in attendance. A group of 77 National Guard troops were on hand to disperse the crowd and at some point they began shooting. With such chaos going on all around, four students were killed and another nine wounded in what eventually became known as the May 4 Massacre. As a result, more than 450 campuses around the country closed the following day and each year those four students who were killed are remembered with a silent march around campus and a candlelight vigil.
